Interpolation:
statistic process or technique used to estimate intermediate values of a function (or measurement) on the basis of known initial values.
Intertidal:
of the area subject to tidal variation, i.e., of the area lying between the highest level of high tide and the lowest level of low tide.
Landsat:
family of satellites designed to observe the Earth through multi-spectral sensors.
Landscape ecology:
ecological science which
brings together the different hierarchical levels
of complexity of ecosystems, providing a
homogenous and original approach to their
interpretation.
Limestone:
sedimentary rock formed mainly of
carbonates. The two most important
components are calcite and dolomite.
Limestones may be of organic or chemical
origin. Cf. Plate 10.
Lipophile:
having an affinity for fats.
Lock:
on a watercourse, a section of a canal or
river that is closed off by gates so that the
water level can be raised or lowered, enabling
navigation between stretches of water on
different levels.
